"They are not poor that have little, but they that desire much. The richest man, whatever his lot, is the one who's content with his lot."
~ Dutch Proverb
Motivation Monday - Richard's Insight
A philosophical one this week; contentment is one of my personal values. I find feeling content a better expression of personal balance than the constant pursuit of happiness, which always seems to need more and more to feel fulfilled, rather than appreciating and being grateful for what we already have. It strikes me that this constant quest for happiness and in particular through consumerism and material possession is very much a modern-day problem we face in the west.
However, we can be poor and yet content, or rich and still feel a void in our lives. So, this Dutch proverb really does hit the mark by flipping being rich and poor away from material wealth and instead onto how we see and feel about our situation. Rich or poor, we can still be content with our lot, or not!
Quite literally, the past few days we have been without hot water whilst awaiting technicians to arrive with the necessary parts. So, today I am feeling particularly content, now that I can take a hot shower again...and there are many in this world that cannot do that, so I am very grateful indeed.
How about you...how rich and contented do you feel with your lot?
