"Any action is often better than no action, especially if you have been stuck in an unhappy situation for a long time. If it is a mistake, at least you learn something, in which case it's no longer a mistake. If you remain stuck, you learn nothing.”
Eckhart Tolle
Motivation Monday - Richard's Insight
Today's quote comes from the book The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. However, the emphasis of the quote is less about living in the now, as is the central theme of the book, but more about overcoming inertia and procrastination. Subtly, it is also about learning and development too.
To do something is better to do nothing. To do the wrong things and still learn from it, is still a valuable exercise too. Many people are afraid or doubtful over which course they should take. Some want to over-analyse and adopt a perfectionist approach instead. If you find yourself in either of those situations, then I suggest that rather than throwing yourself into the first thing that comes along, which would be reckless, instead adopt this simple 5-step approach instead...
- Think
- Decide
- Plan
- Do
- Review
The procrastinators and doubters may well get stuck on steps one to three...so here's my suggested remedy for that...set a deadline to Do and stick to it! If you find that you have imperfect information by the time the deadline comes, then decide based on that limited information and just step out!
If nothing else, you will be able to learn based on your own experience...and that is valuable in itself, as experience is learning from our own mistakes 🙂
The longer that step four is delayed, the harder it will be to get going at all and the longer it will be to realise the results.
So, just do it as one sportswear manufacturer says, or just f***ing do it as a good friend of mine and former army major would say!
