“You cannot get rid of the positive and negative balance. If you try to put on a facade for the world about how positive and upbeat you are, there will be chaos in your private life or your personal health.”
∼ Dr. John F. Demartini ∼

Motivation Monday - Richard's Insight
There is always a balance in life, be it in the natural world order or in our own lives. Equilibrium will always be restored one way or another. Dr Demartini talks a lot about challenge and support in his book, The Values Factor. We will always have both in equal measure in our lives no matter what. So, we had better expect that and then accept it too.
That's a tough message to digest perhaps, especially for all those that have only ever been fed the always be positive and all will be good message. Frankly, it is both unrealistic to expect that and potentially dangerous too!
There will inevitably be negatives or challenges that we will meet in our lives...it is quite simply part of life itself. To believe otherwise is just naïve.
Now, that does not mean that we have to always be looking for negatives or challenges, it is just that we should really expect them to happen at some stage, just as we should rightly expect positives and support too. Highs and lows met with a similar not-too-extreme responses will help our psyche to keep up a healthy balance. It is also more realistic, just ask a heroin addict if they can maintain the highs all the time...
That all said, I stay positive and optimistic in general terms and so I expect good things to happen and for my optimistic attitudes and beliefs to attract them in fact. It is simply that I also know that to be human, we must also face and overcome negatives and challenges too.
Having an appreciation of this sense of balance can then help us to make sense of the world around us and not fall foul of becoming a victim should something not so great happen in our lives.
This could all sound a little uninspiring, but I have found the opposite to be true. I have been liberated really, as I now accept that life has its ups and downs and I can handle both with equal measure. I continue to strive for excellence and pursue my goals in life, it's just that I now realise and accept that to get there I will need to navigate some more challenging situations along the way. It's just a natural part of life's balancing act.
Positive and negative, challenge and support...are always 'both / and' not just 'either / or'.
