The Property Voice Podcast - Musings: Feel like it or not, do it anyway!
I don’t feel like it, I can’t do it, not bothered, one day when…Do these sort of statements sound familiar? These and the rest of my ‘dirty dozen barriers to success’ are flipped around into my ‘12 springboards to success’ instead. For new habits, get more accountability, celebrate and reward success and plug your gaps are just some of the tool, techniques and tips that we can use to turn potentially sabotaging thoughts, feeling and actions into sure-fire come rain or shine actions instead.

Transcription of the show
Hello and welcome to another edition of The Property Voice Podcast, my name is Richard Brown and as always it is a pleasure to have you join me again on the show today.
During the summer I am recording these summer soundbites of musings episodes whilst I prepare series two for you. On the subject of series two, I recorded a great interview with a subject matter expert the other day…I cannot wait to share that with you. One gap I have right now, is to speak to someone who has managed an exit of their property portfolio. I am on the hunt for such a person, a Fergus Wilson-type of person if you like, so if you happen to know such a person ping me an email podcast@thepropertyvoice.net and I can take it from there.
So, here we go with another summer soundbite…
Property Chatter
I wrote a quotation that I used for my regular Motivation Monday share this week and it goes like this:
"Whether we feel like it or not, do it anyway."
I like it because it emphasises how if we rely on feelings, sooner or later we will reach a point where we don’t feel like doing something and give up. So, it changes the emphasis into committed action instead.
This was on my mind during the week and it has lead me onto today’s episode, as there are a number of things that can get in the way of our success, our hopes and dreams and simply sabotage us from reaching our full potential.
Let me give you a personal example. I decided to adopt a new morning routine earlier this year. It involved a number of disciplines that help me to stay on track with my goals for example. However, it also meant getting up earlier, for me at around 5:30 a.m. when I didn’t need to get up until 7 a.m. Trust me, there were many a morning when I felt too tired to get up so early and was tempted to hit snooze instead. But I underwent a 30-day challenge to implement this morning routine and even set up my own small accountability group to report on progress on Facebook. Now I had a small goal to aim at: 30 days, I was developing a regular habit and I made myself accountable to others, receiving their support in the process too. As a result, I made it past the initial 30 days and so I reset the clock for another 30 days, as the psychologists say that it takes 66 days to make a new habit…OK so I was 6 short but hey!
I made it for another 30 days, so taking the exercise in ‘bite-sized chunks’. And now, it is an automatic thing. I often wake just before I need to, I get up straight away and I go to my regular, quiet place to undertake my morning routine each and every day. I don’t even think about it and the habit now overtakes the feeling that I might have to stay in bed longer. I have adjusted it to suit weekends but not by much, I still go through my routine at weekends as well…just not at 5:30 a.m. although the funny thing is that my body clock often wakes me up then anyway lol.
So, this idea of putting feelings aside, among other tools and techniques has inspired this particular episode and has lead to what I call the dirty dozen barriers or obstacles and the 12 springboards to successful task completion. I have laid these out in a table and plan to go through each of them, matching a barrier to a springboard and sharing the odd tool that can help us to apply the springboard more fully into our lives.
OK, here we go with my dirty dozen to twelve springboards to success…
Dirty Dozen to 12 Springboards to Success

10. I never finish | Focus & rewards | Light small fires, celebrate & reward success |
11. Anxiety & worry | Live in the present moment | The power of now book, meditation |
12. I don’t have…education, money, time, experience, contacts, etc. | Plug your gaps | Partnerships, self-education, networking, outsourcing, prioritisation |
There are a number of books that I have read that can help with many aspects of what I have shared today, such as: The Chimp Paradox from Prof Steve Peters, The Slight Edge from by Jeff Olson and others, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey, The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday, The Power of Now by Tolle Eckhart, The One Thing by Jay Papasan & Gary Keller & The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod
That reminds me…I set myself a reading challenge for this year, originally it as to read 24 books in 2015 but I have now surpassed that goal and reset it higher at 36 books instead. I was able to do this by adopting several of the techniques and tools that I mentioned above. As a result, my knowledge has sky-rocketed as I grow and develop from the wisdom of others.
So, that’s it for another week, I hope that has been useful to you…which do you prefer…the dirty dozen or the 12 success principles? One is list negative and the other positive…so I hope that even if you identify with many of the items in the dirty dozen, that you can see a way to flip them around instead. As I always say, I am still very much on my own journey here, so sharing not preaching! It would be great to hear of your own tips and tools for success, so drop me an email podcast@thepropertyvoice.net and let me hear what works for you…
Tune in over the next couple of weeks for more in summer soundbite series. Meanwhile, the show notes are available at our website www.thepropertyvoice.net
