“Legacy is planning for our life’s endeavors to remain 20, 50 or even 100 years longer than we do. Just imagine how we could build something of value that outlives us.”

The idea of leaving a legacy is not confined to some of the greats, such Nelson Mandela, William Wilberforce, Thomas Edison, William Shakespeare and a whole range of others well known leaders and pioneers. We too can leave our own legacy. Many see it as providing an inheritance for our children, and that is certainly part of the meaning of legacy.
However, the fuller meaning of legacy I am thinking of here, relates to how we touch and improve the lives of other people beyond our immediate family. It does not have to be a political milestone, a historical moment, a scientific breakthrough or a glorious library of prose. It can simply be helping to make the lives of another person better with rather than without our mark.
We can and probably do already practice this throughout our lifetime. However, just imagine the ripple effect and positive energy created by starting something when we are alive that still benefits people long after we have gone?
That’s a very powerful and wonderful concept as far as I am concerned, and it has made me start looking at a longer time horizon for my own life’s work as a result. How about you?
